Overview of MPP Academy

The Medical Physician Preparation (MPP) Academy is a year-round, early outreach medical school preparation program that provides rigorous academic instruction and social-emotional skills training to help aspiring medical doctors become a competitive medical school applicant, with the mindset, tools, and resources to succeed in medical school and beyond. We partner with medical schools, student organizations, and other stakeholders to build a pipeline of future medical students, as early as the 4th grade, from diverse backgrounds to the physician workforce.

The MPP Academy works to increase the number of high achieving students who are academically and mentally prepared with the social-emotional skills to: 1) complete medical school and 2) become licensed to practice medicine in a medical specialty that provides a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives.

Our pipeline programs are delivered in a hybrid format (online and on-campus) over a 2-4 year period, depending on student grade level. We offer students a variety of academic and career experiences, and personalized guidance over the course of our year-round pipeline programs to help students break through the barriers that exist on the path to medical school. Every summer, MPP students participate in a 1, 2, or 3 week summer intensive program at a top university. Additionally, students are engaged in weekly virtual online classes for 2-4 hours per week during the academic year.

The MPP Academy is open to high achieving elementary (4th & 5th grade students), secondary (6th-12th grade students), and undergraduate students from all backgrounds who might not have considered a career as a medical physician or have already committed to pursuing a career in medicine.

15 Core Competencies for Medical School

Successful medical school applicants are able to demonstrate skills, knowledge, and capabilities in these 15 defined competency areas. The 15 Core Competencies for Entering Medical Students have been endorsed by the AAMC Group on Student Affairs (GSA) Committee on Admissions (COA) are listed here.

Over the past few years, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) have been reviewing the framework needed for premedical training and for the lifelong training needed for medical school and practice. They issued a report, “Scientific Foundations for Future Physicians,” outlining the scientific and quantitative competencies that premedical students should master as well as a companion report, “Behavioral and Social Science Foundations for Future Physicians,” indicating that the conceptual framework in these disciplines that premedical and medical students need in order to understand socio-economic and cultural determinants of health and to address health care disparities.

Drawing upon this extensive research by several advisory panels, AAMC’s Group on Student Affairs and Committee on Admissions endorsed 15 core competencies for entering medical schools. The AAMC defines competency as an “observable behavior that combines knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes related to a specific activity.”

We recommend all students interested in applying to Medical School to do the following:

  • Visit the AAMC website to review the list of competencies.
  • Review AAMC’s Self-Assessment Guide, “Anatomy of an Applicant: Competency Resources and Self-Assessment Guide for Medical School Applicants.
  • Prepare a portfolio to keep track of and to reflect on your progress and to begin to frame this information in ways that would be useful when applying to medical school.

We urge students to consider these competencies when making decisions about courses, potential experiential learning experiences, community service, health-related service in research and clinical care.
