MPP Elementary School Program

For high achieving 4th - 5th grade students.

OVERVIEW

The Medical Physician Preparation (MPP) Academy elementary school program is a hybrid, year-round, college and career readiness and medical school preparation pipeline certificate program. Our online/on-campus early outreach pipeline program targets high achieving 4th and 5th grade students from all backgrounds, including students underrepresented in medicine, who might not have considered a career as a medical physician or have already committed to pursuing a career in medicine. Our program is designed to attract, recruit, and nurture a diverse pipeline of future medical students who are academically and mentally prepared with social-emotional skills and resilience to:

  • Successfully complete pre-medical college coursework
  • Enter and complete medical school
  • Complete residency requirements to become licensed to practice medicine in a medical specialty that provides a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives.

Our program prepares the next generation of physician leaders to impact the healthcare of our communities. The program is delivered in a hybrid, online/on-campus format through three integrated components:

"Pre, Pre-Med" Academic Year Program

(Hybrid: Online/On-Campus)

During the school year, students attend live online classes face-to-face with faculty and other program students via Zoom, for 2-3 hours per week, typically on the weekend, for 35 weeks. Additionally, students participate in a variety of academic and career preparation experiences throughout the year, in collaboration with practicing physicians and medical scientists, leading medical schools, and healthcare institutions throughout the nation.

In addition to the possibility of attending the virtual youth conference with their school, MPP Academy students will attend an exclusive conference in the Fall, Spring and Summer. Participation in the youth conference provides students with the opportunity to network with other students across the United States and Canada. The program is facilitated by medical school students, practicing medical physicians and scientists, and medical school faculty and leaders.

The initiative was established to support the goal of the MPP Academy: To attract and build a diverse pipeline of future medical doctors, as early as 4th grade, to the physician workforce.

The conference is comprised of three activities:

  • Clinical Simulation Experience
  • Pre-College Human Anatomy & Physiology Seminar
  • Medical School Panel Discussion, Q&A Session: Preparing for Pre-Medical University Coursework & Medical School

MPP Academy is an accredited member of the Accreditation Council for K-12 Medical School Preparation Pipeline Programs (ACMSPP). The Accreditation Council is an independent physician-led, not-for-profit organization that sets and monitors the core competencies and educational standards essential in preparing future medical students to thrive in pre-medical undergraduate study, medical school and beyond.

When a medical school preparation pipeline program such as the MPP Academy holds ACMSPP accreditation, it means that ACMSPP recognizes that our program meets a set of designated standards and can be trusted to deliver quality "pre, pre-med"education and training to elementary and secondary students across the world.

Given the impact of COVID-19 on many families, our hope is to remove the financial barrier for those families in need by waiving the tuition cost to participate in NAPCA’s Medical Physician Preparation (MPP) Academy.

Definitions.

Commuter vs. Commuter Extended

Commuter refers to students participating in the academic program from 8am-5pm each day. Commuter Extended refers to the commuter day program plus additional time, 5pm-7pm. The Commuter Extended day program gives commuter students the opportunity to participate in evening activities such as social and recreational group activities and have dinner in the University dining hall with residential students and MPP Academy staff.

The extended option also aids parents who are not able to pick up their children at 5:00 pm. Commuter and commuter extended students are responsible for the cost of travel to and from the program as well as individual spending money for souvenirs during college tours, medical school tours, and other program activities.

Residential students

Residential students live on campus and are responsible for housing, meals, and any other living expenses. Students are responsible for the cost of travel to and from the program as well as individual spending money for personal hygiene needs, laundry, and souvenirs.

  • Elementary students will have an opportunity to live on-campus in the freshman dorms during the “last weekend” of the 4 week summer intensive program.
  • Parents are welcome to live on campus and serve as a volunteer chaperone. Space is limited.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Make your MPP Academy experience possible through our financial assistance program.

The MPP Academy understands that family circumstances may not enable all qualified students to attend a program without financial assistance. Therefore, through the generosity of donors, financial assistance, to the extent possible, will be made available to assist as many admitted students as possible.

The financial assistance committee takes into consideration extenuating circumstances such as recent job loss, illness, and injury. Limited aid is available and an application is not a guarantee of financial assistance. Financial assistance is provided on a rolling basis and will be distributed until all funds have been exhausted.

Eligibility

  • Financial assistance is available to the families of students who have been admitted to the program. Assistance is distributed fairly and openly on a first-come, first-served basis and is subject to fund availability.

Financial Assistance Process & Notification

To be considered for financial assistance, applicants must complete two items:

MPP Academy Online Application for Admission: Apply Now

Financial Assistance Application: Apply Now

The financial assistance application deadline is on a rolling basis until all funds set aside for families in need have been distributed. We will do our best to help as many students/families as possible. Students will be notified of their financial assistance award at the time they receive their admission decision letter via email.

Application Requirements

Families who would like to prepare materials in advance, please have the following items ready to complete your Financial Assistance Application.

All items must be submitted via the online financial assistance application:

Household Information

PROOF OF INCOME FROM PARENTS/GUARDIANS

Documents required: Copy of most recent federal income tax return or paystub.

  • Providing proof of income from both of the student’s parents including step-parent(s) living in the same household with the student, if applicable, is required unless you have a special circumstance.
  • If your family has a special circumstance that prevents both of the student’s parents from providing proof of income, you will need to describe your special circumstance in your financial assistance application as it will help our financial aid committee better understand your situation.

PARENTS WHO ARE NOT LIVING IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD:

  • Parents who are not living in the same household can submit their proof of income separately. If your family chooses to submit proof of income separately, each parent will need to complete and submit our financial assistance application for their child independently.

Application Deadline

Financial Assistance Deadline

There is no deadline. Students are encouraged to apply early for priority consideration. Limited aid is available and an application is not a guarantee of financial assistance. Financial Assistance awards are made on a rolling basis and will be distributed until all funds have been exhausted.

Fundraising

While the MPP Academy would like to meet the financial needs of all students, the large volume of financial assistance applicants combined with limited funding means that not all applicants will receive financial assistance.

Students and parents have reported that online fundraising was one of the best ways to secure the additional funds needed to cover their cost to attend the MPP Academy. Our students and parents wrote a compelling letter to ask for donations from family and friends. Additionally, parents that maintained a Facebook page, placed the letter on their Facebook page to spread the word to family and friends. Many of our students have used gofundme.com, kickstarter.com, and indiegogo.com to do online fundraising. Online fundraising has proven to work for our students and parents. In several cases, students have been able to raise funds covering the full cost of their program and travel expenses.

If you need help setting up your online fundraising website, our student support team is here for you. You can set up your personal online fundraising website in about 10-15 minutes.

NAPCA ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Medical Physician Preparation (MPP) Academy Juliana Smith

Juliana Smith

I participated in NAPCA as a high school student in 2012 at the University of Southern California. I’m currently a 1st-year medical student at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). I think the most powerful thing I gained from the program was the confidence to pursue a career in medicine. I cannot thank the program enough for that!

Additionally, I loved it so much that I wanted to get involved as a staff member. In the summer of 2015-16, I coordinated all student activities outside of the classroom on the campus of Harvard University. I am so grateful for this experience as it helped to build my leadership skills.

I highly recommend that you consider attending NAPCA’s MPP program and taking advantage of everything the program has to offer. If you had the opportunity to talk to a future medical school student, what would you tell him/her?

If your current circumstances don’t match your dreams, meaning you don’t have the grades, finances, knowledge, experience, etc. to pursue it, don’t let that discourage you. You need help on your journey. There are several people who have had obstacles similar to yours and have accomplished exactly what you want to do. You have to find these people and come up with a game plan. Programs like NAPCA’s Medical Physician Preparation Program can provide the support and guidance that you need.
