Diversifying the Physician Workforce Scholarship Program

MPP Academy Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion & Community Partnerships is excited to offer a scholarship opportunity to current medical school students. With the support of the NAPCA Foundation and the Medical Physician Preparation Academy, an early outreach medical school preparation pipeline program, the MPP Academy Diversifying the Physician Workforce Scholarship (DPW Scholarship) provides financial support in the form of a $1000 scholarship and mentorship to further the education of medical school students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine health research or innovation with the potential to impact the world.

Award

One student will receive a $1000 award and one year of mentorship from a practicing physician.
A portion of the award, $500, will be distributed to the awardee’s U.S. college or university on their behalf for tuition expenses, and $500 will be distributed directly to the awardee for other educational expenses such as books and/or laptops, housing expenses, etc.

Eligibility Requirements

An applicant must:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time student at a regionally accredited U.S. medical school and have completed at least one semester of medical school coursework.
  • Maintain good academic standing and a 3.0 grade point average or higher. 
  • Demonstrate a drive to succeed in pursuing a health career, leadership, and/or passion for diversifying the physician workforce as evidenced by a record of activities or accomplishments.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to advancing new ideas, concepts, approaches, policies, programs, technologies, potential treatments, or products that improve health and reduce health disparities.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to achieving the MPP Academy’s Goal 2035
  • Be willing to volunteer with the MPP Academy early outreach medical school preparation program in some capacity to help build a diverse pipeline of future medical doctors and scientists for the physician and healthcare workforce, as early as 4th grade, that is more representative of the U.S. population.

DPW Scholarship Application Process Checklist

Applicants must submit the following items by 11:59 pm EST on May 15, 2023.

  • Completed online DPW scholarship application and short-answer responses.
  • A current curriculum vitae or resume. Upload CV or resume to the online scholarship application.
  • Transcripts obtained from the candidate’s school registrar verifying academic standing. Upload unofficial transcripts to the online scholarship application.
  • 2 Letters of recommendation from a faculty member and 1 letter from a mentor, addressing the candidate’s experiences and qualities that align with the eligibility criteria.
    • The 2 faculty letters of recommendation must be placed on university letterhead. Upload all letters of recommendation to the online scholarship application.
