About the MPP Academy

Academy Overview

The Medical Physician Preparation (MPP) Academy is a year-round, early outreach medical school preparation program that provides a 1, 2, or 3 week on-campus summer intensive program and weekly online classes, 2-4 hours per week, during the academic year.

The Medical Physician Preparation (MPP) Academy is designed to increase the number of high achieving students who are academically and mentally prepared with the social-emotional skills to: 1) complete medical school and 2) become licensed to practice medicine in a medical specialty that provides a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives. Additionally, the MPP Academy was built to work in partnership with Medical Schools and other stakeholders in the medical community to build a pipeline of students, as early as the 4th grade, from diverse backgrounds to the physician workforce.

The MPP Academy is open to high achieving elementary (4th & 5th grade students), secondary (6th-12th grade students), and undergraduate students from all backgrounds who might not have considered a career as a medical physician or have already committed to pursuing a career in medicine.

MPP Academy Goal 2035

Our big goal is to increase the diversity among doctors who are underrepresented in the physician workforce from the current rate of 11% to 20% by 2035. We are committed to building a pipeline of future medical students, as early as 4th grade, that is more representative of the U.S. population.

MPP Academy Logic Model Snapshot

To illustrate how NAPCA does its work, we offer a “program logic model” to link our program activities to specific outcomes. The MPP Academy includes carefully crafted instruction, program elements, and supports. The table below highlights a snapshot of the MPP Academy’s immediate, intermediate, and long-term outcomes that the program aims to achieve.

Mission Statement

Committed to Closing the College and Career Aspirations – Attainment Gap for All Students

Our mission is to “close the college and career aspirations – attainment gap” by empowering students with the tools and mindsets to define their life’s purpose/career path, breakthrough their barriers and complete a postsecondary education degree or career training certificate or licensure program, specifically to enter careers that provide a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives.

College and Career Aspirations – Attainment Gap: The distance between a student’s stated college and career aspirations and the realization of completing a post-secondary education degree or career training certificate or licensure program, specifically to be prepared to enter high skilled careers or trades.

Statement of Accreditation

  • The Accreditation Council for Medical School Preparation Pipeline Programs (ACMSPP) is an independent physician-led, not-for-profit organization that sets and monitors the core competencies and educational standards essential in preparing future medical students to thrive in pre-medical undergraduate study, medical school and beyond.
  • Accreditation of a medical school preparation pipeline program is a process by which a program is evaluated by a group of its peers (“peer evaluators”) in order to determine its quality. The peer evaluators perform this evaluation by conducting an in-person “site visit,” after which an accreditation decision is made by the ACMSPP Board of Commissioners.
  • ACMSPP is also the largest accrediting agency, accrediting medical school preparation pipeline programs throughout the United States, its territories, and internationally.

Why Choose MPP Academy

The MPP Academy represents an unparalleled opportunity for students from elementary school through high school to explore careers in the field of medicine, to develop a comprehensive education and career plan (roadmap), and to develop skills of emotional literacy and resilience to help students break through any barrier that they may face on their path to success. Additionally, the academy empowers students with the knowledge and understanding of the process of applying to college and to medical school, the prerequisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to attend medical school, collegial and professional networks, and ultimately, helps students fulfill their life’s purpose or goal of becoming a licensed medical physician.

MPP Academy Goal

Goal 1: Introduce students to a variety of career paths in the field of medicine and healthcare that they would not be exposed to on their own. The focus is to get students excited about the opportunity to pursue a career as a medical physician.

Goal 2: Cultivate the next generation of physicians and leaders in medicine who will have the knowledge, skills, and mindsets to thrive in medical school and impact the healthcare of our communities. The focus will be to provide a safe and engaging environment for students and to deliver a comprehensive program to prepare students for college and a career in medicine and healthcare.

Goal 3: Prepare students to present strong academic credentials to medical school admissions committees and provide in-person and virtual workshops and seminars focusing on premedical academic preparation, social-emotional skills, and navigating the medical school admissions and financial aid application process.

Goal 4: Provide comprehensive pre-med programs and activities to improve student academic performance in Math & Science,
and address students who are not meeting grade-level standards. State Standards-aligned with benchmarks will be established and implemented. A comprehensive Response to Intervention (RtI) program will be initiated and subgroups will be addressed.

Goal 5: Parents will be active partners with the MPP Academy and the NAPCA Foundation. The focus will be to augment parent opportunities for involvement and improve the communication between the MPP Academy and home.

Goal 6: MPP Academy will fully implement the NAPCA College & Career Readiness Standards (CCRS). MPP Academy faculty, college and career advisors, and staff will be fully trained and provided with aligned materials; technology integration will also be a focus.

Academy Outcome

At the end of the year-long program, students will be able to determine if a career in medicine aligns with their core values and interests or realize that the field of medicine is not a good fit for them. Either way, students will have gained valuable career exploration, planning and decision making skills to help them find a career path that provides a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives. Additionally, students will have gained social-emotional skills, experienced life on a college campus, and met high achieving students from around the U.S. and the world.

MPP Academy Goal

To cultivate the next generation of physicians and leaders in medicine who will have the knowledge, skills, and mindset to thrive in medical school and impact the healthcare of our communities.

We aim to accomplish this goal by preparing our participants to present strong academic credentials to medical school admissions committees and providing in-person and virtual workshops and seminars focusing on premedical academic preparation, social-emotional skills, and navigating the medical school admissions and financial aid application process.

Academy Impact

College Readiness: NAPCA students are better prepared for college than non-NAPCA students at specific schools served by NAPCA, surpassing students when it comes to “a-g” coursework and entrance exam completion, four-year college eligibility, college enrollment, college persistence, and college completion.

Coursework: NAPCA students are three times more likely to complete the “a-g” courses required for college admission than their non-NAPCA counterparts: 91% compared to 30%.

College Enrollment: 98% of NAPCA students attend college the first year after high school graduation.

College Success: The college persistence rates of NAPCA alumni are equal to or better than their campus counterparts who did not participate in NAPCA.

History

The MPP Academy (formerly the NAPCA Summer Academy Medicine & Healthcare Program) was founded in 2012 at the University of Southern California and is in its 10th year of preparing young scholars to thrive in medical school and beyond.

We are supported by contributions from various donors including the NAPCA Foundation. Their generosity enables us to enhance the academic skills of students and support them in successfully entering and graduating from medical school or health professional training programs.

Student Safety & Supervision

Student safety and supervision are our first priority at NAPCA. Campus security officers and designated NAPCA staff frequently patrol all campus facilities used by the program and are trained in safety and emergency procedures. Our student-to-staff ratio of 10:1 will ensure that our students are supervised and cared for during the program. Students are supervised by MPP staff throughout their entire day as they move from activity to activity in our small group format. Staff are carefully recruited from top universities across the globe. Staff members are carefully screened, undergo extensive background and reference checks, and are CPR & First-Aid Certified.

For those students that live on campus, nightly room checks are conducted to ensure all students are safe and secure, and designated staff perform scheduled walkthroughs of the residence halls while students are resting in their dorm rooms from 11:00pm to 7:00am. During site visits, all students must stay with their assigned group and staff member as well as cooperate with site-specific security measures.

Comprehensive communication plans are put in place prior to the start of programs. Staff members remain in constant contact with each other and with the on-site office. Emergency communication plans are also in place, allowing us to communicate directly with parents in the event of an emergency.

FACULTY & STAFF

Carefully-vetted Academy faculty and staff are recruited from top universities and medical schools.

Our selective hiring practices yield the most highly qualified, passionate instructors from top universities.

Thorough background checks

We take safety seriously. All faculty and staff members undergo extensive background and reference checks, and program faculty and staff are CPR & First-Aid Certified.

Staff Training

We train our faculty and staff to ensure they are prepared to educate and inspire students, and keep students safe.
