Visual Acuity

Using the Snellen Eye Chart, students will be able to test bilateral visual acuity on each other.

Students will learn how to guide their patient through six cardinal motions to test extraocular muscle function.

Students will be able to demonstrate the pupillary light reflex and learn the role of Cranial Nerve III.

Using otoscopes, students will be able to visualize the anatomy of the inner and outer ear.

Identification of Heart Sounds and Murmurs

Students will learn to identify the rate and rhythm of a normal heart using stethoscopes.

Students will learn the anatomical landmarks to listen to lung sounds, and will learn how to differentiate heart from lung sounds.

Wound Cleaning and Laceration Repair

Students will learn how to effectively clean a new wound, and will apply laceration techniques including dermabond and staples.

Radiology – X-Ray Image Reading

Students will learn the basics of reading an x-ray image and identify common anatomy.

Sterile Gown Technique and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Students will learn proper donning and doffing of PPE in the surgical operating room setting and sterile technique.

Standardized Patient Care: Patient Interview and Diagnostic Skills

Students will learn how to communicate with a patient as a healthcare provider during an office visit.

Students will learn how to tie a surgical knot, identical to those used by surgeons in the operating room.

Assessment of Vitals Signs: Temperature, HR, RR, BP, Pulse Ox

Vitals signs provide the physician with crucial information regarding the hydration status, pain, hemodynamic balance, and body’s stress response and learning to quickly assess vital signs is an important skill to have early in medical school.

Students will be taught the importance of the Cranial Nerves for our 5 senses and will be taught how to identify and test Cranial Nerves I – XII.
